From the reds of autumn to the sparkle of Christmas: unique experiences in every region.
The province of León welcomes late autumn and the first signs of Christmas with a calendar full of nature, gastronomy and unique traditions.
November and December are two perfect months to enjoy peaceful getaways, discover charming villages, share in local celebrations such as the magostos bercianos (chestnut harvest festivals), or get closer to the cultural essence of the León region through ancestral customs that are still alive today.
Hiking in autumn
Autumn paints the landscapes of León in shades of red and gold, transforming the province into an ideal setting for hiking. From the gentle routes of southern León, such as the Esla Greenway or the Palomares Route, to the mountain trails of the León Mountains, with routes such as Fuentes del Omaña or Pico Cornón, the variety of landscapes is endless.
In El Bierzo and Ancares, the trails combine wild nature and traditional architecture, with itineraries such as the Malpaso Bridges or the Water Route. For the most demanding hikers, the Picos de Europa and the Montaña de Riaño offer iconic routes such as the Senda del Arcediano or the Ruta del Cares, with spectacular views. In addition, León has historical, mining and transhumant routes that allow visitors to discover the cultural identity of the province step by step.
León cuisine in autumn
Autumn in León is all about seasonal produce and traditional recipes. Reineta apples and Conference pears from El Bierzo fill the local markets, while chestnuts take centre stage during the traditional magostos, which are celebrated with bonfires and folk music in numerous villages in El Bierzo.
At this time of year, cecina de chivo, one of the foods most closely associated with the mountains of León, also takes centre stage. Every November, Vegacervera celebrates the Cecina de Chivo Fair, a gastronomic event featuring tastings, a craft market and exhibitions.
Nor is botillo missing, the star dish of El Bierzo, accompanied by cachelos (potatoes) and berza (cabbage), ideal for combating the autumn cold.
Gastronomic events in November and December
Gastronomy takes centre stage with events held throughout the province. November marks the start of the Mycological Days in El Bierzo, with guided tours and mushroom tastings. Likewise, the Jornadas de la Matanza (Slaughter Days) are celebrated in towns such as Villablino and Puebla de Lillo, a tradition that forms part of León’s cultural heritage. In Murias de Paredes, the Omañés Stew Festival showcases this mountain dish, which is slowly simmered over a low heat.
In December, the gastronomic celebrations continue with new slaughter days, this time in Riaño, and the La Tercia Gastronomic Days in Villamanín, which promote traditional cuisine made with local products such as cecina (cured beef), legumes and meat from the Central Mountain Range.
Traditional fairs
Local fairs keep the cultural and social pulse of the province alive during these months. In November, the traditional Santa Catalina Fair is held in Cistierna, an agricultural and livestock event with deep roots in the region. Santa Lucía de Gordón hosts its Mycological Week, while Sahagún celebrates the historic San Simón Fair.
The Cecina de Chivo Fair of Vegacervera continues to be one of the major attractions of autumn in León.
Christmas in León
Christmas arrives in León laden with symbols and traditions that have remained intact generation after generation. Among these, the nativity scenes on mountain peaks stand out, small nativity scenes that are placed on top of nearby mountains after festive climbs with family or mountaineering groups. Another unique tradition is that of the León bouquet, a structure decorated with ribbons, candles and typical products that presides over houses and town squares as a symbol of prosperity and good wishes for the new year. Much more than just a decorative element, the León bouquet is a cultural symbol and a true hallmark of Christmas in León.
