MALLORCA PRESENTS ITSELF AT FITUR WITH TOURISM CONTAINMENT DATA AND A CLEAR COMMITMENT TO TOURISM INTELLIGENCE

  • The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, has met with Etihad Airways, which will connect Palma and Abu Dhabi starting in June.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, accompanied by the Secretary of State for Tourism, Rosario Sánchez, the president of SEGGITUR, Enrique Martínez Marín, and the new Minister of Tourism, Guillem Ginard, presented this morning at FITUR, before the international tourism sector gathered at the fair, the Mallorca Intelligent Destination Platform (PID), a key strategic tool for moving towards a more sustainable, intelligent and balanced tourism model.

Before the presentation, President Galmés stressed that ‘the change of direction initiated in this legislative term, with courageous policies of restraint and a commitment to responsible tourism, is beginning to bear fruit’. Galmés stated that ‘the latest tourist arrival figures confirm that we have achieved the desired containment of tourism. There has been a slight decrease in visitors during the high season months and a significant increase in November and January, among other months.’

President Llorenç Galmés, accompanied by the new Minister of Tourism, Guillem Ginard, met with representatives of Etihad Airways, which will improve the island’s connectivity with its new direct Palma-Abu Dhabi route starting in June. With three weekly flights, it will turn Mallorca into an international hub and open the door for residents to destinations in the Middle East and Asia.

Mallorca PID, the Intelligent Destination Platform

Councillor Ginard was responsible for presenting Mallorca PID, a project that forms part of the strategy to transform the island’s tourism model, which places the combination of tourism and culture at the heart of the destination’s positioning. At the same time, it recognises data and technology as fundamental tools for responsibly managing tourism, protecting the territory and improving coexistence between residents and visitors.

The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life of residents, ensure the sustainability of the destination and strengthen Mallorca’s competitiveness as an international benchmark in tourism innovation.

On this subject, Councillor Ginard stated that ‘the Intelligent Destination Platform will allow us to better manage our territory, protect our environment and ensure that tourism continues to be an opportunity for residents and visitors’.

Mallorca PID is committed to a collaborative governance model, with the participation of public administrations, municipalities, tourism companies, local entities and citizens. In this way, it will provide the island with an advanced technological infrastructure capable of centralising information from different key areas.

The project, led by the Consell de Mallorca through the Mallorca Responsible Tourism Foundation, has a total budget of €4.8 million and will be developed in several phases. The expected completion date is June 2026.

The presentation at FITUR was closed by the Secretary of State for Tourism, Rosario Sánchez, who highlighted that ‘this project in Mallorca is an example of the vision that the Secretary of State for Tourism had at the time. Channelling unprecedented investment to transform the tourism model, with more tools to manage destinations through technology, innovation and digitalisation’.

Mallorca PID is part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, funded by the European Union, in the component dedicated to the modernisation and digitalisation of the Spanish tourism ecosystem, and is integrated into the national strategy for smart tourist destinations, promoted by SEGITTUR and the DTI Network.
