Debuting in the new Lexus RZ luxury electric SUV, the Lexus Steer-by-Wire system offers a dual range of benefits. It provides control, precision and a faithful, instantaneous response to the sensations behind the wheel, something highly valued by the world’s top professional drivers. At the same time, it offers smooth, intuitive handling that creates a comforting feeling of constant connection to the road, strengthening the dialogue between driver and vehicle and enhancing pure driving pleasure.
In addition, the system is capable of filtering out unwanted vibrations while driving to provide a more relaxed driving experience, while its innovative design provides improved forward visibility, enhancing safety and driving control.
Furthermore, the innovative S-teer-by-Wire technology is key to the future development of new autonomous driving standards.
The technology: an electronic steering system
Unlike conventional steering systems, the Lexus Steer-by-Wire system has no physical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels. Instead, steering manoeuvres are communicated via electronic signals, transmitted by a torque actuator located on the steering wheel shaft to a steering control actuator located on the front axle rack. This ensures a quick and direct response, conveying great confidence and control when driving.
In addition, this system features redundant safety measures inspired by the world of aviation to provide a parallel backup system. This system will intervene immediately whenever a malfunction is identified to ensure uninterrupted performance.
A redesigned jet-style steering wheel
The new Steer-by-Wire system uses a new jet-style steering wheel with a compact and highly ergonomic design. Designed without the traditional upper and lower curved sections, it is visually similar to the controls found in an aeroplane.
This is not simply a design exercise; thanks to its shape, the new steering wheel allows for a steering angle of only 200 degrees between stops. This makes steering easier and more precise, virtually eliminating the need for hand-over-hand turns. As a result, only small movements are required on the part of the driver to indicate to the system the direction in which they wish to move.
In fact, the compact dimensions of the new steering wheel have significantly improved the driver’s field of vision, offering better visibility of the road, as well as more space to comfortably access the driving position with greater space between the steering wheel and the legs.
This undoubtedly further enhances the fundamental qualities of the ‘Tazuna’ driving position concept, which prioritises the driver by placing controls, switches and information displays within easy reach, so that they can be used with minimal hand and eye movement.
Steering that adapts to every situation
The Lexus cable steering system has the added advantage of variable steering ratio, which automatically optimises performance according to the vehicle’s speed.
In this regard, the steering operates with a shorter ratio in low-speed situations, making it easier to manoeuvre when turning at an intersection or parking. At medium speeds, for example when driving on winding roads, only minimal input is required for agile, exciting and fun driving performance. And at high speeds, the ratio automatically increases to promote stable vehicle behaviour and a safe and confident driving experience.
Connection to the road
In addition to receiving steering wheel signals, the Steering Control Actuator detects forces generated by the road surface. This enables it to filter out unwanted vibrations, for example during braking or those caused by tyre performance due to sudden movements on uneven surfaces, and transmit a greater sense of control through the Steering Torque Actuator.
This means that the driver continues to receive authentic and accurate information about driving conditions and the road at all times. A clear steering feel that gives you a constant sense of connection to the road and a natural feel for how the car is performing.
With the new Steer-by-Wire system, the wheels are also less likely to move against the driver’s intention, even when driving on steep slopes.
100% electric technology compatibility
In addition to being able to adjust operation according to the driving situation, the S steer-by-Wire system works in combination with Lexus’ DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system. Together, they produce a closer and more rewarding synchronisation between the driver’s actions and the car’s behaviour, increasing the level of interaction when driving.
The Lexus Steer-by-Wire system is now standard on the new RZ 550e F SPORT, along with the DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system and the innovative Interactive Manual Drive system.
It is also available as an option on the new RZ 500e Luxury model in conjunction with the DIRECT4 drive system.
