EL MIRÓN, BY PRADOREY, A NEW LOOK AT THE RIBERA DEL DUERO

  • This newcomer is fresh and contemporary, combining regional identity and precise production to offer an elegant and balanced interpretation of the DO, designed for those who enjoy discovering new ways of experiencing wine.

  • Born from the Hoyo Dornajo, Los Quemados, and Valdelayegua estates in a year of reduced production due to frost and heavy rains, the result is a wine full of freshness and personality.

Pradorey (Carretera CL-619. km 66, 1. Gumiel de Mercado, Burgos. Tel. 947 54 69 00) begins the year by expanding its renowned Gama de Autor range with the launch of El Mirón 2024, which aims to become one of the great symbols of the new Ribera del Duero: fresher, more elegant and contemporary, designed for those who enjoy discovering new ways of experiencing wine from an open, curious perspective connected to the present.

At Pradorey, they have been exploring the Ribera del Duero for some time from their own unique perspective, developing other ways of producing wine without losing the link to the origin and tradition that defines it. This philosophy has given rise to projects that push the boundaries of what is expected within the DO, such as El Cuentista, El Buen Alfarero, and El Retablo, among others, with a focus on more contemporary styles. Fernando Rodríguez de Rivera, CEO of the winery, explains that “the new Ribera del Duero is not about changing who we are, but about looking at our territory from a different perspective. At Pradorey, we have been reinterpreting our origins for years with projects that push the boundaries, and El Mirón was created for a new generation that seeks authentic, fresh, and less solemn wines that respect their origins while speaking the language of today.”

El Mirón is made from a selection of grapes—Tempranillo, Albillo Mayor, and Merlot—from three of the winery’s own estates—Hoyo Dornajo, Los Quemados, and Valdelayegua—with the aim of achieving a balance between structure, freshness, and aromatic expression. And with a philosophy of minimal intervention that seeks to accompany the natural expression of the wine. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts marks the beginning of a process aimed at preserving the identity of the fruit and the character of its origin, followed by ten months of aging in used barrels—mainly French oak—which adds complexity and structure without overpowering the whole.

The result is a wine that is easy to enjoy and offers a freer and more accessible way to discover the Ribera del Duero. Designed to be opened without too much ceremony, easy to share and understand, it is equally at home with an impromptu meal or a gourmet dinner. With a recommended retail price of €12, El Mirón is positioned as a gateway to a more open Ribera, reflecting the winery’s natural evolution towards labels that combine identity, accessibility, and a renewed interpretation of the territory.

Interestingly, its name is based on the turret that stands between the three estates from which it comes, known as ‘El Mirón’. Every year, storks nest there, a symbol of roots, memory, and fidelity to one’s origins. Hence, the protagonists of the label are both the birds and that iconic viewpoint and the person who scans the horizon with his binoculars, giving the label its name.

Pradorey is daring, passion, intuition, and freedom; something that is reflected in the unique, constantly evolving idea of Ribera del Duero of its director, Fernando Rodríguez de Rivera Cremades, and in the 21 wines they currently sell, of which four—Adaro, Salgüero Tinto, Sr. Niño, and Lía—are 100% organic. All their wines are made from their own grapes and they are pioneers in the DO in the use of century-old clay jars and fermentation with native yeasts. Their wines reflect the character of their land, each with its own personality and something to say. To enjoy them, there is nothing better than visiting the winery with its wine tourism offer and traveling back in time from La Posada, a 17th-century Herrerian-style gem where Rubens, Lope de Vega, and Philip III stayed. They are also available for purchase in their online store online https://www.pradorey.es/tienda-online/ and can be shipped anywhere in mainland Spain.
