Passporter, the Spanish travel tech company, has detected sustained growth in demand for Asian destinations, with longer itineraries, more planning and a clear focus on experiences.
Asia is once again at the top of Spanish tourists’ travel wish lists. After years marked by short and medium-distance trips, the market is regaining interest in more distant destinations, but now with a different mindset: it is no longer just about visiting the main tourist icons, but about understanding the culture, connecting with the environment and enjoying experiences with a great personal impact.
Passporter, the travel platform that offers inspiration and helps to plan, organise and share trips in a simple and visual way, has detected sustained growth in demand for Asia, especially among travellers aged 30 to 50 who are looking for longer trips with a clear transformative component.
The company unveiled this data yesterday to the Spanish media at an event organised at the Le Macao restaurant in Madrid. The event was attended by Andrea Cayón, co-founder and co-CEO of Passporter, and Júlia La Casta, Head of Marketing.
More time at the destination and strategic planning
According to Spanish travel tech, one of the main trends is the extension of the duration of the trip. Whereas the standard used to be eight or nine days, itineraries of between 12 and 18 days now predominate. The motivation is clear: Asia is not a place to be toured, it is a place to be experienced, and this requires more time at the destination.
Spanish travellers want to combine major cities with natural environments, ancient traditions with local cuisine and, increasingly, integrate moments of mindful relaxation. Planning has also become more sophisticated: bookings are made further in advance, routes are optimised and minimum stays of two or three nights per destination are prioritised to avoid an excessively fast pace.
Japan, a star destination
Japan is consolidating its position as the star of this new wave of travel. The combination of tradition and avant-garde, spirituality and technological innovation makes the country a unique cultural experience. Beyond Tokyo and Kyoto, interest is growing in less explored regions such as Takayama, Kanazawa and the island of Kyushu. The Japanese autumn and cherry blossom season continue to be major seasonal attractions, but more and more travellers are seeking to delve deeper into the local philosophy, stay in traditional ryokans or participate in tea ceremonies.
Southeast Asia for nature lovers
British market, while Malaysia and the less crowded islands of the Philippines are emerging strongly. This shows that the new traveller prioritises authenticity, with an interest in visiting local markets and craft workshops, cycling through rice fields or enjoying gastronomic experiences with local chefs. The concept of luxury is being redefined as time, silence and real contact with the culture.
In addition, wellbeing is becoming an essential part of the itinerary: yoga retreats in Bali, traditional Thai spas and stays in natural environments far from the crowds are increasingly in demand.
Personalised groups and greater investment in experiences
Small group travel – between four and ten people – with fully personalised itineraries is also growing in popularity. This model combines autonomy with expert guidance and allows for optimised logistics in culturally complex destinations.
In terms of budget, although Asia continues to offer good value for money, flights can account for between 35% and 50% of total expenditure in high season. Spanish travellers are willing to invest more if the experience offers added value: private guides, exclusive excursions or accommodation with its own identity.
Finally, gastronomy is consolidating its position as one of the main drivers of decision-making, with street food, haute cuisine and culinary activities being integrated into the itinerary design.
