- Solo travel has grown by 25% over the last three years, according to data from CamperDays.
- Japan, Costa Rica and Iceland have seen the biggest increases in demand among non-traditional destinations.
- The JOMO philosophy and conscious travel are shaping the way female travellers plan their itineraries and choose efficient, practical vehicles.
More and more travellers are choosing to embark on adventures on their own, seeking authentic, flexible experiences close to nature. According to data from CamperDays, solo travel has experienced sustained growth, with a 25% increase between 2023 and 2025. Among those travelling alone, women are playing an increasingly prominent role, and by 2025 they accounted for 40% of all solo trips, reflecting women’s significant participation in independent tourism.
“The growth in solo travel reflects a shift in how we understand tourism: more and more people, and especially women, are prioritising the experience over the destination, valuing flexibility and seeking trips that suit their interests and their own pace,” says Adriana Neves, marketing manager at CamperDays. She adds: “The advantage of working with a network of over 150 suppliers worldwide is that we guarantee vehicles for different situations, including those who prefer to travel alone, enhancing independence and comfort without compromising on safety.”
Those who opt for solo travel prioritise their own routes and destinations according to their tastes and interests, activities at their own pace, and vehicles that allow them to get around safely and comfortably. Beyond strict planning, these travellers value the experience of nature, digital disconnection and the opportunity to enjoy every moment to the full, in line with the JOMO (Joy Of Missing Out) philosophy. JOMO celebrates the freedom to miss out on what others are doing, consciously choosing how to experience the journey and which experiences to incorporate, making the trip a more personal and meaningful experience.
Growing destinations and market trends
Data from CamperDays shows that alternative and emerging destinations such as Japan, Costa Rica and Iceland are experiencing the strongest growth. This reflects a growing interest in exploring places beyond conventional itineraries, where the combination of nature, culture and safety is key. The peak booking periods are in January and February, during the holiday planning season, and in November, coinciding with Black Friday deals. Although prices per night are slightly lower, the total travel budget, globally, remains stable, with an average spend of €2,756 in 2025, just 4% lower than in previous years.
Motorhomes as a tool for efficiency and flexibility
The motorhome market is also evolving to adapt to this new way of travelling. Forecasts for 2026 suggest that the vehicle will become a tool for efficiency and flexibility, with smaller, more functional and well-equipped models gaining greater prominence. Travellers are making increasingly informed and conscious decisions, taking into account factors such as sustainability, safety and perceived value – a trend aligned with so-called ‘conscious travel’. This allows users to travel with confidence, optimising both the experience and available resources, without sacrificing the freedom that characterises solo travel.
With these changes, motorhome travel for solo travellers, particularly women, is establishing itself as a segment of growing importance. The combination of independence, connection with nature and conscious decision-making is redefining the travel experience, offering itineraries that prioritise authenticity, personal enjoyment and flexibility over predetermined destinations or activities.
