THE MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV, JAPAN’S TOP-SELLING PLUG-IN HYBRID FOR THE SECOND YEAR RUNNING

  • The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has become Japan’s best-selling plug-in hybrid for the second year running, having sold 7,800 units in the 2025 financial year.

Since 1964, Mitsubishi Motors has contributed to the advancement of electrification through the research and development of electrified vehicles. In 2009, the company launched the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, the market’s first mass-produced electric vehicle, followed by the introduction of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in 2013 as the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV with four-wheel drive. Subsequently, in 2020, it expanded its range of electrified vehicles with the addition of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV, steadily advancing its electrification strategy.

The Outlander PHEV has received significant recognition in key markets such as Japan, North America, Europe and Australia, establishing itself as a leading model in the electrified SUV segment. In March 2025, cumulative sales of the Outlander PHEV exceeded 100,000 units in the Japanese market. In Canada, the model ranked first in the PHEV category for three consecutive years, achieving a high market share in multiple key regions.

In Spain, the Outlander PHEV has a long and successful track record, having been the leader among plug-in hybrids for over seven years. Since its launch in 2013, 7,000 units have been sold in Spain, making it a clear benchmark in an increasingly competitive segment of which it was once the pioneer.

As Mitsubishi Motors’ flagship model, the Outlander PHEV is designed to function as an electric vehicle for everyday use and as a hybrid for longer journeys. This electrified SUV offers the quiet, smooth and powerful acceleration characteristic of electrified vehicles, alongside safe and stable handling in a variety of weather and road conditions, thanks to its renowned and prestigious four-wheel drive system.

Its recent update included an improved traction battery that extended the range in electric mode and enhanced acceleration. The quality of the interior and exterior design has also been raised, with expanded safety systems and the inclusion as standard, amongst other features, of the high-quality audio system developed in collaboration with Yamaha Corporation across all versions, further enhancing the vehicle’s overall appeal.
