On 12 August, one of the most significant astronomical phenomena visible from Spain in over a century will take place: a total solar eclipse. Palma and its entire bay lie within the path of totality, meaning that, for approximately 1 minute and 36 seconds, the moon will align with the sun, casting the city into darkness and offering a spectacle not seen in the country since 1905.
The combination of Palma’s geographical position, its relationship with the sea and its open vantage points makes the city a prime location from which to enjoy this astronomical phenomenon. Furthermore, the eclipse will occur very close to sunset, with the sun over the Mediterranean, making it particularly impressive.
When the moment of totality arrives, several striking things will happen, which can be appreciated in a unique way from the bay of Palma:

- Bright planets and stars appear for a few seconds.
- The solar corona can be seen around the black moon.
- The temperature may drop slightly and the landscape is illuminated by a twilight glow.
- After that minute and a half, the sun suddenly reappears in the form of a ‘diamond ring’, one of the most impressive moments of the phenomenon.

- Paseo Marítimo: With a relaxed atmosphere and easy access from the city centre, the Paseo Marítimo is ideal for those who prefer to watch the eclipse whilst strolling by the sea. The harbourfront offers plenty of spots to sit or stop whilst the sun sets over the Mediterranean.
- Can Pere Antoni Beach: This city beach, situated very close to the city centre, offers one of the clearest views of the horizon. From the sand, you can watch the eclipse unobstructed, with the skyline of Palma in the background.
