Malta is strengthening its role in the international audiovisual industry with the fourth edition of the Mediterrane Film Festival, which will take place from 21 to 28 June 2026 in the capital, Valletta, as well as at other iconic locations across the country.
Mediterrane Film Festival, organised by the Malta Film Commission, continues to grow, establishing itself as a key platform for talent and global production.
Under the slogan “Beyond Together”, this edition focuses on the connection between cultures, industries and creatives. On this occasion, the festival is expanding its programme to five sections:
- Big Screen Competition will be a celebration of the best in commercial cinema, featuring bold offerings and a line-up that brings together established and emerging film talent from around the world.
- Mediterranean Competition will spotlight the latest cinema from the Mediterranean region, highlighting local stories and voices that reflect the richness and creative ambition of its filmmakers.
- Mare Nostrum takes its name from the Latin term used by the Roman Empire to refer to the Mediterranean: “Our Sea”. The section will bring together films with an environmental message.
- Best of the World will be a showcase for the most inspiring international cinema, featuring an eclectic selection of genres and styles coming directly to Malta from every corner of the globe.
- Malta Focus will offer local audiences and visitors the chance to discover Maltese cinema through short and feature-length films that showcase the talent and concerns of the country’s filmmakers.
Screenings will take place in iconic venues such as the Embassy Cinema, as well as at locations that have featured in big-screen productions, such as the Upper Barrakka Gardens or Fort Ricasoli. Furthermore, the festival is reviving its professional programme with talks and masterclasses led by leading figures from the industry, strengthening its standing within the international circuit.
The event will culminate in the Golden Bee Awards ceremony on 28 June, an awards ceremony that recognises cinematic excellence and which this year is expanding its categories, reflecting the festival’s growth.
This growth comes at a key moment for Malta, which, having celebrated the centenary of its film industry, continues to consolidate its position as a leading destination for international productions, supported by a solid infrastructure, attractive incentives and a constantly evolving creative ecosystem.
