TOYOTA, BMW, BOSCH AND REPSOL LAUNCH A PILOT PROJECT INVOLVING VEHICLES RUNNING ON 100 PER CENT RENEWABLE PETROL

  • Toyota Motor Europe (TME), the BMW Group, Repsol and Bosch are launching a pilot project in Spain to demonstrate, under real-world conditions, how current vehicles can run exclusively on 100 per cent renewable petrol.

 

  • The six-month initiative, which will begin in July 2026, will feature a fleet of approximately 20 Toyota and BMW vehicles, fuelled by Repsol’s 100 per cent renewable Nexa 95 petrol, supported by Bosch’s digital fuel traceability system.

 

  • The pilot illct ill provide real-world evidence that renewable fuels can be rolled out on a large scale from today using existing vehicles, refuelling infrastructure and digital certification technologies.

The Bosch system will collect and validate refuelling data from multiple sources, including the vehicles themselves, service stations and fuel card transactions, ensuring robust and transparent tracking of renewable fuel usage.

By accurately monitoring each vehicle’s fuel consumption in real time, we are laying the foundation of trust and regulatory compliance necessary for greater acceptance of renewable fuels in the mobility and transport sectors.”

A scalable solution that makes use of existing vehicles and infrastructure

Unlike other solutions that require new propulsion technologies or investment in infrastructure, the pilot project uses existing Toyota and Lexus models, supplied by Toyota España (TES), as well as vehicles from the BMW fleet. The aim is to highlight the immediate scalability of renewable fuels for large-scale deployment as a direct solution for decarbonising road transport.

Repsol’s Nexa 95 renewable petrol is produced from feedstocks that comply with the requirements of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED), enabling a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared with fossil fuels, whilst maintaining full compatibility with current petrol engines and infrastructure.

Spain has been selected as the ideal location for this demonstration thanks to the availability of renewable petrol, the strong collaboration between the partners and the operational support provided by Toyota Spain.

This project highlights how renewable fuels can broaden consumers’ options, offering a new way to reduce their carbon footprint using existing vehicles and infrastructure”.

“As the only company currently supplying 100 per cent renewable petrol at public service stations in Spain, Repsol is proud to contribute its expertise and infrastructure alongside Toyota, BMW and Bosch. The data obtained under real-world conditions will demonstrate the value of a technology-neutral approach to the mobility transition in Europe,” she concluded.

Strengthening the case for technology neutrality in Europe

The pilot project is designed to generate data and information that will contribute to the current European debates on the decarbonisation of the automotive sector.

Against a backdrop where European Union policies are primarily focused on electrification, the project aims to demonstrate that renewable fuels can play a complementary and scalable role in reducing CO₂ emissions.

Interim data and results from the project will be shared with European Union policymakers, industry representatives and the media, contributing to the debate on technology neutrality and the possible inclusion of VEEF vehicles in future regulatory frameworks.

As the transition progresses, it is becoming increasingly clear that there is a risk the target of achieving a 100 per cent zero-emission vehicle fleet by 2035 may not be fully met. In this scenario, renewable fuels can help bridge that gap towards achieving carbon neutrality, particularly when combined with hybrid and plug-in hybrid technologies. This pilot project aims to demonstrate how renewable fuels can make a significant and sustainable contribution to decarbonisation from today, for both new and existing vehicles.”

Driving measurable impact

One of the key factors in the project’s success will be to promote the effective use of renewable fuel across the entire fleet, thereby helping to reduce emissions and reinforce the initiative’s impact.

Furthermore, the project will provide valuable information for validating R&D activities and monitoring methods, the scalability of current physical refuelling traceability systems, and the ability of fuel operators to link fuel consumption to individual vehicles.

* Renewable fuels: renewable and low-carbon fuels that meet the sustainability criteria set out by the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and which enable significant reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout their entire life cycle (“well-to-wheel”) compared with fossil fuels. This includes sustainably produced biofuels and renewable fuels derived from waste, by-products or renewable energy sources, as recognised in the positions of ACEA and FuelsEurope in support of the deployment of vehicles powered exclusively by renewable fuels (VEEF).

Toyota Spain (TES) distributes, markets and provides after-sales service for Toyota and Lexus vehicles from its headquarters in Alcobendas (Madrid), supported by a network of 74 Toyota dealerships, comprising 160 Toyota sales outlets and 177 Toyota service centres. Vehicles are distributed from the Sagunto Logistics Centre (Valencia), whilst spare parts are distributed from the Central Warehouse in Illescas (Toledo). In addition, Toyota Spain operates a Training Centre in Alcobendas (Madrid). In the 2025 financial year, Toyota’s sales in Spain totalled 105,424 registered vehicles, whilst Lexus sales totalled 9,200 vehicles.
