The destination, situated on the country’s east coast, is undergoing a phase of tourism development characterised by significant investment in the hotel sector and a firm commitment to sustainability and the conservation of the natural environment.
With a firm commitment to sustainable development and exclusivity, Miches is set to become one of the Caribbean’s most promising emerging destinations by 2026. For years, this former fishing and farming village has been one of the least-known corners of the Dominican Republic’s north-eastern coast. Today, however, it is undergoing a major transformation that is putting it on the international tourism map.
Situated in the province of El Seibo — close to Punta Cana International Airport — Miches boasts some of the country’s most unique natural landscapes: kilometres of largely undeveloped beaches, mountains covered in lush vegetation, lagoons, waterfalls and a coastline that retains its natural character intact.
A destination to discover beyond its beaches
Far from the more crowded traditional tourist circuits, Miches stands out for its stunning geography, where the lush vegetation of the Eastern Mountain Range meets the waters of the Atlantic directly. Among its great natural treasures is Playa Esmeralda, a vast stretch of white sand and turquoise waters that has become one of the destination’s main attractions.
A few kilometres away lies Montaña Redonda, one of the best vantage points from which to admire the landscape from above. From its summit, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the coastline and the area’s lagoons, as well as the popular swings, which have now become one of Miches’ most recognisable sights.
Also well worth a visit is Laguna Limón, surrounded by tropical vegetation and accessible via boat or horse-riding excursions, and El Salto de la Jalda, one of the highest waterfalls in the Caribbean, situated in a natural setting reached via hiking trails.
Furthermore, its proximity to Samaná Bay and Los Haitises National Park positions the destination as a hub for ecotourism and wildlife watching in this part of the country.
New investments are putting Miches on the international map
This natural heritage is now being complemented by a growing transformation and investment in tourism. Under a strict Tourism Development Plan focused on environmental sustainability and a positive impact on local communities, the destination is set to receive investment of over 1 billion dollars for the construction of high-end hotel complexes, thereby expanding the destination’s offering and attracting a type of traveller seeking to enjoy the Caribbean whilst being closer to nature and experiencing the local area.
One of the main new developments for 2026 is the Paradisus Miches project, the result of an agreement between Meliá Hotels International and Grupo Puntacana. Announced at the start of the year, the future resort will have 600 rooms and will be situated on more than 500 metres of unspoilt beach.
The project follows on from the recent openings of other establishments such as the Dreams Playa Esmeralda and Secrets Playa Esmeralda resorts – all-inclusive hotels operating under the Unlimited-Luxury concept – which have already established a new tourist area around Playa Esmeralda.
Miches is thus entering a new phase. The arrival of major international brands is transforming its tourism offering, but the destination’s main attraction remains precisely what sets it apart: a natural setting that allows visitors to enjoy the Caribbean at a more leisurely pace, away from the large traditional tourist areas.
Thanks to the excellent air links between Spain and the Dominican Republic – with daily direct flights to the country’s main airports – Miches is establishing itself as an ideal choice for Spanish travellers.
