A natural barrier of rocks keeps the waters calm, creating a shallow natural pool where you can float and enjoy the warm water. A few kilometres further east, in Arecibo, La Poza del Obispo lies in the shadow of a historic lighthouse. This small cove conceals a natural phenomenon that makes it unique: the surrounding limestone rock formations prevent the tide from rising, creating a natural pool of crystal-clear, completely still water. For those seeking a more secluded spot, Peña Blanca, in Aguadilla, offers an idyllic landscape. Its imposing walls of white karst rock not only create a picture-postcard scene but also form hollows that serve as natural shelters from the sun or as spots for meditation. Underwater, the marine life is diverse and vibrant, making this beach a top spot for snorkelling, with the chance to spot turtles and colourful fish. During the summer months, between May and August, the waters are at their calmest, whilst in winter the beach becomes an ideal destination for surfers, so choosing the right time of year is key for those who simply want to relax.
But tranquillity is not limited to the main island. In Vieques, la Playa Caracas, formerly known as Red Beach, forms part of the National Wildlife Refuge and offers a landscape of white sand and deep turquoise waters. With lifeguards on duty and a family-friendly atmosphere, it is one of the most accessible beaches in the archipelago. Although there are no facilities on the beach itself, visitors can use the facilities at the entrance to the refuge.
Further south, off the coast of Ponce, Caja de Muertos Island — officially known as Playa Pelícano — stands as a natural sanctuary. Declared one of Puerto Rico’s most enchanting attractions, this small island is only accessible by boat, making it an exclusive destination for those seeking total disconnection. As well as enjoying its crystal-clear waters, visitors can walk the path leading to the lighthouse and go birdwatching amidst protected flora and fauna.
And, to round things off, La Playuela in Cabo Rojo – better known as Playa Sucia on the main island – offers a landscape of cliffs and endless sand, with the Los Morrillos lighthouse as a privileged witness. This spot, within the Cabo Rojo nature reserve, is the perfect setting for a day of total relaxation, with the chance to round off the day with a sunset that’s perfect for photography and creating unforgettable memories.
