AUTUMN IN EL PRIORAT: FROM THE VINEYARD TO THE ‘SPA’ AT THE GRAN HOTEL MAS D’EN BRUNO WITH ‘THE WINE EXPERIENCE’

OTOÑO EN EL PRIORAT: DE LA VIÑA AL ‘SPA’ EN GRAN HOTEL MAS D’EN BRUNO CON ‘THE WINE EXPERIENCE’
  • The 5* Grand Luxury boutique hotel, which has just been awarded its first Michelin Key, combines grape seed exfoliation, a massage with warm grape seed and lavender oil, and a resveratrol facial using natural cosmetics at its spa.

With the grape harvest just over and the vines changing colour, the Priorat region is entering its most tranquil season. It is the perfect time at the Gran Hotel Mas d’en Bruno to discover ‘The Wine Experience’, the star treatment at its spa: two hours dedicated to skincare with grapes as the main ingredient, all at The Stein Group’s exclusive boutique hotel, which bears the Relais & Châteaux seal and has just received its first Michelin Key.

The 120-minute treatment unfolds in three stages. It begins with a revitalising grape seed exfoliation (30 minutes), continues with a relaxing massage using warm grape seed and lavender oil (60 minutes) and concludes with the ‘Mas d’en Bruno’ facial treatment, featuring resveratrol and antioxidants (30 minutes). The entire ritual is carried out using Foosh’s natural skincare products and aims to achieve a dual effect: deep relaxation of body and mind, and a visibly rejuvenated complexion.

The grape, from the seed to resveratrol

It is no coincidence that the grape takes centre stage in a region that lives and breathes wine. Its skin and seeds are rich in polyphenols such as resveratrol, prized for their antioxidant properties, and the spa makes the most of them at every stage of the ritual. The hotel’s relationship with Foosh goes back a long way: together they developed a wine therapy range made from DOQ Priorat grapes, featuring an exfoliant that uses the ‘brisa’ (the seeds, skin and pulp left over after pressing) and which can only be experienced at Mas d’en Bruno.

“The Wine Experience is our way of telling the story of Priorat through the skin”, explains Ángel Pérez, spa director at Gran Hotel Mas d’en Bruno. “We start with the grape, move on to the oil from its seeds and finish with resveratrol. It’s all about the grape from start to finish, in a land where everything revolves around the vineyard”.

A sanctuary of waters amongst ancient oil presses

The ritual can be completed in the spa’s waters area, designed as a space for contemplation that incorporates the estate’s ancient oil presses. Capacity is very limited and advance booking is always required. For those seeking absolute privacy, the spa can be privatised, transforming it into an exclusive retreat.

‘The Wine Experience’ forms part of a programme that pays tribute to three local treasures: wild lavender, olive oil from the region’s olive groves, and grapes. This shines through once again in the ‘Mas d’en Bruno’ geothermal ritual, featuring hot basalt stones, warm grape-seed oil and a facial massage with Foosh, and in ‘Excellent Body’, which combines grape-seed exfoliation with massage.

The ‘Herbal Pindas’ treatment uses handmade wild lavender pindas infused with local extra virgin olive oil, and for those returning from exploring the vineyards on foot or by bike, ‘Diamond Trail’ offers a half-hour leg and foot massage. Natura Bissé rounds off the range with its vitamin C treatments.

A luxury stay in the Priorat

After a visit to the spa, autumn makes you want to stay a while longer. The Michelin-starred Vinum restaurant serves dishes by chef Josep Queralt, who reinterprets Catalan tradition using local produce, and offers wine tastings in the hotel’s wine bar. The 24 stunning suites are set in a farmhouse dating from 1797 and an adjoining building, lovingly restored at the foot of the Montsant.
