The Tenerife resort has published its Sustainability Report, demonstrating that world-class hospitality can go hand in hand with respect for the environment, local cuisine and people’s well-being.
In the south-west of Tenerife, where the Atlantic meets one of the island’s most unique landscapes, Abama Resort has created a destination where luxury, wellbeing and respect for the environment are woven into a single experience.
More than just a place to stay, the resort offers a different way of understanding travel: a stay in which the landscape, cuisine, architecture and care for the environment are all part of the same philosophy.
This is reflected in the resort’s new Sustainability Report, a document summarising more than fifteen years of work focused on people’s well-being, environmental protection and the development of a tourism model capable of generating both economic and social value.
A purpose-driven project
Since its creation in 2010, Abama Resort Tenerife has developed as a project built on three pillars: minimising environmental impact, maximising the comfort of its visitors and ensuring long-term economic viability. This vision has enabled the resort to anticipate many of the regulatory requirements that now shape the future of the European tourism sector, demonstrating that sustainability can be a natural part of the travel experience.
“We have to find that balance between offering a fantastic guest experience and keeping our ideals and principles aligned with sustainability. In fact, we must use sustainability as a tool to enhance the experience itself,” explains Adrián Almirante, managing director of Abama Hotels.
Today, the complex comprises five-star hotels such as Las Terrazas de Abama Suites and Los Jardines de Abama Suites, alongside Abama Residencial and Villas del Tenis, all designed with energy efficiency and sustainable construction in mind.
From the very outset, the resort was designed to blend into the landscape of south-west Tenerife and make the most of the natural conditions of the surroundings, a philosophy that guides the architecture, energy management and responsible use of resources.
Cuisine that connects with the local area
Sustainability is also reflected in Abama Resort’s culinary offering. In venues such as Melvin by Martín Berasategui, the cuisine is built around locally sourced produce and close collaboration with producers from the islands.
“At Melvin, we have been firmly committed to local and zero-kilometre produce for seven years now. When a visitor arrives on an island like Tenerife, they also want to discover the produce that the region has to offer,” explains Sergio Fuentes, head chef at Melvin by Martín Berasategui.
This philosophy showcases the flavours of the archipelago and helps to strengthen the local economy, reduce the transport footprint and preserve the islands’ culinary identity.
Nature, golf and marine conservation
Respect for the natural environment is also evident in other areas of the resort. The Abama Golf course, designed by Dave Thomas, incorporates practices aimed at more efficient resource management and the care of the surrounding landscape.
At the same time, Abama collaborates with local organisations dedicated to marine conservation to protect the ecosystems of south-west Tenerife and the species inhabiting its waters, such as whales, dolphins and sea turtles.
This commitment is also reflected in Abama Blue Ocean, a publishing project that highlights the richness of the Teno-Rasca marine corridor, one of the most important cetacean habitats in Europe. Through a carefully curated publication that brings together the perspectives of photographers and marine scientists, the initiative invites readers to discover this environment from a more conscious and intimate perspective.
In addition to its educational value, the project allocates part of its proceeds to local organisations dedicated to marine conservation, thereby reinforcing the resort’s commitment to protecting the ocean. Full details of this initiative can be found on the resort’s website, in the section dedicated to Abama Blue Ocean.
A commitment that looks to the future
Beyond its environmental impact, the resort has created stable, skilled employment, prioritising collaboration with local suppliers and helping to strengthen the island’s business community. Furthermore, it supports cultural, sporting and educational initiatives that promote inclusion and social cohesion.
“The aim is not to wait until 2040, but to reach 2030 with our homework done. And, by the time 2040 comes around, to already be exceeding the regulations,” says Francesc Pujol, Director of Real Estate at Abama Resort.
