In the morning: La Gomera on two wheels

The roads winding through ravines, the changes in elevation and the viewpoints overlooking the Atlantic make La Gomera a particularly attractive place to explore by bike. The Bancal Hotel & Spa, which holds Cycling Friendly Bronze certification, features a Bike Point with secure bike storage, a washing machine and a workshop, e-bike hire and a range of routes for exploring the island. The activity continues at the hotel itself through Respira, one of the strands of its programme of experiences, offering activities centred on movement and wellbeing, such as yoga, breathing sessions, training and outdoor activities.

In the afternoon: water, heat and volcanic stone

After an active morning, it’s time to wind down. Auala Wellness & Spa features a 380 m² hydrotherapy circuit, complete with a vitality pool, jacuzzi, massage jets, Finnish sauna, aromatic steam room, halotherapy, sensory showers and plunge pools.

At Auala Rituals, the setting of La Gomera inspires treatments such as the Bancal Signature Massage, whose movements evoke the waves of the sea, or the volcanic stone massage, which combines the stones’ heat with various massage techniques. The offering is rounded off by Auala Fit, a 24-hour gym.

At sunset: the island on your plate

As the sun begins to set, La Gomera comes to the table. The cuisine at Bancal Hotel & Spa is characterised by seasonality and locally sourced produce. The hotel works with around 80 local suppliers and prioritises ingredients grown, produced and harvested on the island. At Larrife Restaurant, situated 92 metres above sea level, this larder is transformed into a contemporary interpretation of La Gomera’s cuisine. For a more informal experience, El Patio offers a sharing menu based on fresh, locally sourced produce and dishes that revive local recipes and traditions.

At night: Starlight skies

In autumn, night falls earlier and one of the day’s greatest spectacles begins when you look up. Bancal Hotel & Spa holds Starlight certification, which recognises the quality of the night sky and the protection it offers against light pollution.

The hotel also organises stargazing activities and provides guests with equipment to admire the night sky. So, after a day of cycling, pampering and discovering the island’s flavours, you can round off the day overlooking the Atlantic and under the stars.

Also on the agenda: La Gomera’s culture

A getaway to La Gomera is about more than just its landscapes. Bancal rounds off your stay with experiences that allow you to delve into the island’s traditions, history and identity, with cultural and gastronomic offerings linked to the region and some of its defining characteristics. Nature and exercise in the morning, wellbeing in the afternoon, local flavours at sunset and the stars as night falls. This autumn, Bancal Hotel & Spa offers a getaway where the aim isn’t to do less, but to enjoy each experience at a different pace and let La Gomera set the tempo.

About BANCAL HOTEL & SPA

Bancal Hotel & Spa is situated opposite Mount Teide, on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in San Sebastián de La Gomera, and since July 2024 has been recognised as one of the most sustainable hotel projects in the Canary Islands. Inspired by the historic ‘bancales’ – the island’s traditional agricultural terraces – the hotel combines contemporary architecture with regional building techniques and the unique natural landscape of La Gomera.

The hotel features 276 rooms and suites, nine restaurants and bars – including the à la carte restaurant Larrife – and AUALA Wellness & Spa, with a hydrotherapy area, a halotherapy cabin and personalised wellness rituals, as well as a wide range of outdoor activities and nature experiences. Guests enjoy direct access to some of the island’s main scenic attractions, such as Garajonay National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and the unspoilt bay of Playa de Ávalo.

Sustainability is an integral part of the hotel’s concept: the resort runs entirely on electricity, utilises over 2,000 photovoltaic panels and is committed to water reuse, regional supply chains and local employment. For the refurbishment of an abandoned building, the project received the 2024 CaixaBank Award in the ‘Best Hotel Refurbishment with over 100 Rooms’ category.
