CAMPING IN SPAIN CONTINUES TO BOOM AND CONSOLIDATES NEW TRAVEL TRENDS

  • The camping sector in Spain is expected to exceed €1.6 billion in turnover in 2025, according to the DBK Sector Observatory.

  • Summer bookings (June-August) have increased by 17% compared to 2024, reaching a total value of close to €2 million.

  • Travellers are seeking flexibility: the average stay is shortening to almost three days and advance booking is reducing to 27.5 days.

Outdoor tourism in Spain continues to grow and is undergoing a remarkable transformation. Beyond the traditional coastal destinations, travellers are increasingly drawn to inland destinations, where authentic experiences and more comfortable accommodation are prioritised.

Gerona, Barcelona and Tarragona continue to lead the booking rankings. However, inland areas such as Navarra, Zaragoza and León are seeing the highest percentage growth, according to data from Pitchup.com, the leading platform for campsite and outdoor accommodation bookings.

The sector is thus consolidating an upward trend that is also reflected in economic forecasts. According to the DBK Sector Observatory, camping in Spain will exceed €1.6 billion in turnover in 2025, consolidating its position as one of the strongest drivers of national tourism, capable of combining innovation, flexibility and authentic experiences.

Comfort and spontaneity are gaining ground

This geographical shift goes hand in hand with an evolution in accommodation preferences, with glamping establishing itself as a key driver of the sector. In Spain, bookings for bungalow or chalet-style accommodation on Pitchup.com have grown by 28% so far this year.

This quest for comfort is reflected in users’ priorities. Globally, some of the most frequently used search filters in 2025 were ‘electric’ (1.7 million users) and ‘toilet blocks’ (785,000 users).

In addition, travellers are opting for shorter, more flexible stays. So far this year, the average length of stay is almost three days, 4% less than in 2024, and more than one in ten bookings are made on the day of arrival. This growing spontaneity is driving the deseasonalisation of tourism, with getaways spread throughout the year.

A summer of record figures

The positive trend for the year has been reinforced by a strong summer season. Between June and August, campsites in Spain recorded more than 115,000 overnight stays, 17% more than in the same period in 2024, with a total economic value of €1.9 million. Of particular note is 4 August, which became the day with the highest number of bookings during the summer, marking a peak in demand for the season.

In terms of the profile of summer travellers, couples (51.0%) were the main users, followed by families (37.4%), groups of adults (8.3%) and solo travellers (3.3%). By nationality, the main international market continues to be the United Kingdom, followed by France, Germany and the Netherlands.

A sector with its sights set on the future

Interest in outdoor tourism remains strong beyond the peak season. Almost 100,000 people have already enjoyed camping holidays in Spain so far this year, including the month of October.

‘Confidence in the sector is also projected in the long term. For example, a campsite in Malaga has already registered bookings worth €12,000 for the 2026 season on Pitchup.com,’ says Dan Yates, Founder and Managing Director of the platform.
