In the Seychelles, Christmas is not just a date on the calendar: it is a time of unity, flavour and outdoor celebration, surrounded by a privileged natural environment.
Seychelles Authentic Hotels Collection (SAHC) invites travellers to discover a unique Christmas in a destination where tradition blends with the warmth of the Indian Ocean, offering a truly memorable experience.
A tropical Christmas with a Creole soul
The Christmas tradition is deeply rooted among the Seychellois population, which is predominantly Christian. Every year, the small capital, Victoria, is decked out to create a festive atmosphere, churches are filled for Christmas Eve mass, and families gather for celebrations filled with music, dancing and local cuisine. The rhythms of sega and moutya add a vibrant touch to the gatherings, while houses and gardens are decorated with lights and tropical flowers such as hibiscus and frangipani.
Far from the hustle and bustle
Celebrating Christmas in the Seychelles means reconnecting with nature in its purest form. During December, the islands offer warm temperatures, calm waters and clear skies, the perfect setting for exploring almost untouched beaches, taking trips to marine parks or walking among mountains covered, instead of snow, with tropical vegetation. On Mahé, travellers can hike iconic trails such as Morne Blanc or discover hidden coves along its granite coastline. On Praslin, the mythical Vallée de Mai invites you to stroll among coconut palms and endemic fauna, while its beaches, such as Anse Lazio, offer an idyllic setting for a Christmas picnic by the sea. Denis Island, meanwhile, offers a more intimate and wild experience: snorkelling in pristine reefs, bird watching and hiking on a private island where you can completely disconnect.
Celebrations with local cuisine
During this time of year, tables are laden with flavours from the ocean and tropical fruit. Christmas in the Seychelles becomes a true culinary journey, where Chinese, French, Indian and African influences blend with Creole cuisine. The main ingredient is fresh seafood, featured in starters such as grilled fish curry and shark curry. Other common dishes include rougaille (a spicy tomato sauce), chicken curry and, for dessert, ripe plantain cooked in coconut milk, sugar and nutmeg. Picnics and barbecues on the beach are also part of a much-anticipated tradition, especially among families.
The hotels of Seychelles Authentic Hotels Collection offer their guests the chance to experience these celebrations up close. One of the highlights of the season can be found at the gourmet lodge La Belle Tortue, in Silhouette.
Its Christmas menu celebrates festive elegance with a selection that blends tradition, local produce and creative touches. The experience begins with a series of starters that awaken the senses: a pumpkin biscuit with creamy basil and yuzu pearl; a surprising trompe l’oeil of foie gras mousse with roasted banana; and a ‘Ramasse-tout’ tartare made with Bourgeois fish and fresh herbs.
As starters, the lodge presents a refined palette of smoked marlin with caviar and coconut vinaigrette, alongside a warm duo of pan-fried foie gras and grilled octopus bathed in Sauternes juice. The main courses, meanwhile, combine delicacy and character: Japanese-style Bourgeois fish with Amok aubergine and celery foam, followed by French pigeon in two preparations — confit thigh and fillet wrapped in Denis bacon with truffle juice. The finishing touch is a traditional signature Christmas log that intertwines coffee, coconut and vanilla.
Travellers will bid farewell to the year with a festive menu that pays tribute to local flavours and the culinary creativity of its kitchen. The evening begins with a selection of appetisers that combine technique and exoticism: sweet potato cannelloni with bresaola and toasted hazelnuts; a delicate roasted papaya tartlet; and a vegetable taco. For starters, the chef proposes a mahi-mahi and daikon radish carpaccio with caviar and vodka granita, as well as oysters au gratin with Veuve Clicquot champagne sabayon.
The main courses delve deeper into the archipelago’s maritime identity: stuffed squid, a surf and turf risotto, and an intense Ziraf crab bisque give way to a Viennese-crusted chicken supreme with yellow wine sauce, shiitake mushrooms, and herb mousseline. To round off the evening, the lodge presents an iconic dessert, the ‘Coco de Mer’ entremets, a sweet and elegant tribute to the Seychelles’ most iconic fruit and a perfect ending to an unforgettable celebration overlooking the Indian Ocean.
