Two decades after its inception, the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra’s Chamber Music Series continues to bring together several generations of chamber music enthusiasts at the Museo Picasso Málaga. Now an unmissable fixture in the city’s cultural calendar, the series celebrates its twentieth edition this year with a programme comprising nine concerts that will once again fill the Christine Ruiz-Picasso Auditorium with music throughout the season.
The second of these events will take place on Tuesday 3 November at 7.00 pm, featuring a performance by the Flute and Piano Duo, comprising Juan Antonio López Cabezuelos and Natalia Kuchaeva, who will take the audience on a journey through the European Baroque period with works by Platti, Telemann and Bach.
The first piece of the evening will be the Flute Sonata Op. 3 No. 6 by Giovanni Benedetto Platti (1697–1763), an Italian composer whose works are noted for the elegance of their melodic lines and the balance between virtuosity and expressiveness. It forms part of the collection Sei Sonate a flauto traversiere solo con violoncello overo cembalo, one of this master’s most notable contributions to the Baroque flute repertoire. Composed during his time at the court of Würzburg, where Platti served as a musician to Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn and his successors, the work combines Italian melodic elegance with the expressive richness characteristic of the Germanic tradition.
Next we shall hear the Sonata in F minor, TWV 41:f1 by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1767), one of the most prolific and influential figures of the German Baroque. Originally published between 1728 and 1729 in Der getreue Music-Meister (The Faithful Music Master), a pioneering music journal founded by the composer himself, the work was conceived for bassoon and basso continuo, though it soon became part of the repertoire for other melodic instruments thanks to the flexibility of its composition. Composed during one of the composer’s periods of greatest creative maturity, the work reflects the expressive richness and refined instrumental writing that characterise his musical legacy.
The concert will conclude with the Flute Sonata in E major, BWV 1035 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750), one of the most cherished works in the Baroque flute repertoire. Composed in the final years of the musician’s life, the score combines melodic elegance, expressive refinement and technically rich composition – traits that reflect Bach’s creative maturity and have helped to make this sonata one of the most outstanding pieces in the literature for this instrument.
All the concerts in the OFM’s 20th Chamber Music Series take place at 7.00 pm in the Christine Ruiz-Picasso Auditorium. Tickets, at a flat rate of 12 euros, can be purchased at the main ticket offices of the Museo Picasso Málaga and on the museum’s website. Only credit cards will be accepted at the Christine Ruiz-Picasso Auditorium box office.
