Every 18 June, the culinary community celebrates Sushi Day, or International Sushi Day – the perfect occasion to showcase our country’s high standards in preparing these exquisite Japanese dishes.
This year, we’d like to recommend two spots by the Mediterranean where you can enjoy some highly recommended dishes: the long-established Shôko Barcelona restaurant and Kai Beach (Estepona), the Asian-themed complex at Laguna Beach, the Costa del Sol’s most unique wellness hub.
Shôko Barcelona: sushi that bridges Japan and the Mediterranean
Shôko Barcelona is renowned for its club, ranked number 7 on the prestigious The World’s 100 Best Clubs™ list, but also for its excellent restaurant, which has become one of the city’s must-visit destinations thanks to both its menu and its prime seafront location on the Barceloneta seafront for over two decades.
Its culinary offering, led by chef Paolo D’Angelo, combines Mediterranean and Asian influences – a theme that is also reflected in the extensive sushi section of the menu, which features a range of dishes that embody this fusion of the finest local produce with Japanese tradition and technique. Among the must-try dishes are the crispy txangurro roll, a delicious battered maki filled with prawns, txangurro tartare, tobiko and avocado; the spicy tuna, an uramaki filled with avocado, tuna tartare and sriracha emulsion; and the beef uramaki, an uramaki made with beef tartare and filled with asparagus, foie gras and truffle-infused teriyaki.
There are also more traditional options, delicious in their simplicity and equally enjoyable, such as the tuna, salmon, hamachi and prawn nigiri, or the salmon, tuna, hamachi and langoustine sashimi.
Finding it hard to decide? Then there’s nothing better than opting for the chef’s selection, the Omakase (80 euros), a feast of 35 pieces carefully chosen by D’Angelo and his team. For an extra touch of flavour, you can choose to enhance your sushi with Amur beluga caviar.
Kai Beach: Experience Asia and its cuisine on the Costa del Sol
Those who pride themselves on knowing the Costa del Sol well and savouring its most special spots are regulars at Laguna Beach (Estepona), the spectacular 13,000-square-metre resort offering a variety of leisure and dining options.
Among these, the revamped Kai Beach concept stands out: a beach club (with beach access and a kids’ club) that surprises and charms with the transformation of its atmosphere; by day, it’s perfect for enjoying the beach with the family; as the sun sets, everything quietens down and it becomes a magical spot for a candlelit dinner, enjoying good music or having a drink. The most contemporary and alluring of Southeast Asia is the leitmotif of this summer hit.
Its restaurant is perfect both day and night. Its Asian-inspired menu features a carefully curated selection of sushi with fusion touches, prepared in its open kitchen in full view of diners, turning the preparation into a true showcase of its itamae’s skills. There are various mouth-watering rolls, such as the ebi ten – featuring tempura prawn, avocado, Japanese mayonnaise, kimchi, crispy tempura and chives; the ‘chilicrab’ roll, with tempura-coated crab, avocado, kimchi sauce, chives and crispy nori; or the vegan roll, with avocado, cucumber, asparagus, kimchi, tare sauce and chives. There are also nigiri made with the freshest ingredients, such as prawn, flambéed salmon or eel, amongst others.
