Javier Gutiérrez and Mónica Regueiro have just finished filming the short film “Carta de libertad” at the Mondariz Spa. The production explores feelings, personal relationships and experiences shared with fellow Galician actress Raquel Nogueira. Esther Bravo’s short film was directed by Manuel Martín Cuenca, known for “La flaqueza del bolchevique”, “La mitad de Óscar”, “Caníbal” and “El autor”, and produced by Madre Humo, Tablas y más Tablas and Producciones Off.
The film was shot in various interiors of the spa resort, alluding to the love stories held within its historic walls, and in the gardens surrounding the spa town. It is a nod to the Galician setting’s association with clandestine romances over three centuries of hosting the summer holidays of prominent public figures.
“Carta de libertad” introduces Anna and Pedro, a married couple of nearly twenty years, who are going through a crisis marked by routine and a loss of desire. In a desperate attempt to save their relationship, he proposes a “letter of freedom” that would allow them to have sexual relations outside their marriage without breaking their emotional bond. However, what begins as a rational solution soon reveals uncomfortable truths, forcing them to confront the true nature of love, fidelity and the passage of time. A thought-provoking work that raises the question of whether what one has is often better than what one actually believes one desires.
The short film, following post-production work, will be released in September.
