LA GOMERA CONSOLIDATES ITS MODEL OF SUSTAINABLE, CONSCIOUS AND LOW-IMPACT TOURISM AT FITUR

  • The destination’s presence at the fair has given professionals and the media a clear idea of the island’s tourism model, based on quality, respect for the territory and the well-being of the local population.

La Gomera participated in FITUR to reinforce its development model, based on sustainability and tourism management integrated into island life, to the professional tourism sector. During the fair, the destination presented a strategy focused on quality and territorial balance, with the aim of ensuring a positive and lasting impact on the local economy and social cohesion of the island.

The La Gomera Tourism delegation was led by María Isabel Méndez Almenara, Minister of Tourism, Trade and Consumer Affairs for the La Gomera Island Council, who emphasised that the island’s tourism model is conceived as ‘an integral part of island life and a tool for generating social well-being and real opportunities for the local population’, with a clear commitment to quality over quantity.

This approach is supported by the high degree of conservation of the island’s territory, one of the main distinguishing features of the destination. More than a third of La Gomera’s surface area is protected in some way, with the Garajonay National Park, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as the main reference point. Added to this is its recognition as a Biosphere Reserve and its integration into the Natura 2000 Network, a framework that guides tourism planning and reinforces its position as a benchmark in ecotourism.

In addition, as part of FITUR, La Gomera presented six new ecotourism experiences that expand and organise its tourism offering. These experiences are organised around 27 themed hiking and cycling routes and form part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan for La Gomera, Isla Circular, financed with European NextGenerationEU funds. The aim is to diversify the offering, organise visitor flows and promote a more balanced distribution of tourist activity across the island as a whole.

The new proposals cover areas such as astro-tourism, hiking linked to slow tourism, cycling routes for mountain bikes, gravel bikes and electric bikes, coastal tourism, agricultural tourism and cultural and ethnographic experiences. All of them are designed to facilitate a more conscious relationship with the environment and can be done either independently or with professional guidance.

Participation in the fair also served to present the digital tools that accompany this model, including the new official trails and routes app. This application facilitates itinerary planning, access to practical information and real-time incident reporting, contributing to more efficient management of the territory and an improved visitor experience.

As part of the assessment of the destination’s presence at FITUR, the main tourism indicators for the last year were also shared. In 2025, La Gomera received 713,000 visitors, representing a 1.4 per cent increase on the previous year. The average daily spend was around €140 and the average stay exceeded 11 days, consolidating a visitor profile that opts for longer stays and experiences with greater added value.

La Gomera’s presence at FITUR has enabled it to consolidate the strategic lines that guide its development as a destination before the professional tourism sector, as well as to present new tools and products aimed at orderly and sustainable tourism growth.
