As the end of the year approaches, the Innsbruck region is gearing up for one of the most special times of the year.
As the year draws to a close, the Innsbruck region is gearing up for one of the most special times of the year. Alpine Christmas fills the city and its surroundings with markets, traditional scents, cultural events and light displays, whilst Innsbruck and the surrounding mountains take on a special glow. Here are some of the things you can enjoy:
Christmas markets where you can soak up the atmosphere
The Christmas markets are one of the highlights of Innsbruck’s Alpine Christmas, which runs from 13 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. In the city alone, there are seven different markets, each with its own character and something to suit every taste.
Handicrafts, carefully crafted items and original gift ideas are combined with a wide range of culinary delights. Among the must-try treats are traditional roasted chestnuts and the popular ‘Kiachln’, a freshly baked Tyrolean speciality. The best way to enjoy them is to take a leisurely stroll through the illuminated stalls, discover their wares and let yourself be carried away by the aromas and flavours so characteristic of this time of year.
The Christmas tradition also extends to other towns in the region. In Telfs, from 3 to 20 December 2026, its Victorian-inspired market offers a journey back to 19th-century London, with vendors dressed in period costume and carol singers.
Igls will also be holding its own Christmas market from 4 to 20 December 2026. Furthermore, on 23 December, one of the most special moments of the festive season will take place: a grand parade through the town centre featuring the Baby Jesus and around 200 angels, shepherds and animals.
Ice Magic and Lumagica: Innsbruck is aglow
Beyond the traditional markets, Innsbruck offers numerous activities during Advent for families to enjoy the city. This winter, Landhausplatz will host the debut of Ice Magic, which will be open from 12 November 2026 to 21 February 2027. The new attraction will feature ice rinks for skaters of all ages, as well as light shows, events and a range of culinary delights, all set against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains.
A short distance away, Innsbruck’s Imperial Garden will once again be transformed into a vast world of light with Lumagica, from 13 November 2026 to 31 January 2027. Under the theme “Light Art Gallery”, the park will showcase impressive light installations and interactive displays designed to amaze visitors of all ages.
Bergsilvester and Resonanz: two ways to see in the New Year
The celebrations continue beyond Christmas. On 30 and 31 December 2026, Innsbruck will see out the year with its traditional Alpine New Year’s Eve celebration, known as Bergsilvester, and a varied programme of activities. One of the most eagerly anticipated moments will be the fireworks display at the Seegrube, which for a few moments will light up the peaks surrounding the city in a blaze of colour.
For those who prefer to see in the New Year in a more peaceful atmosphere, the Resonanz light art festival, running from 30 December 2026 to 16 January 2027, will offer a more relaxed alternative to the New Year’s Eve celebrations. Illuminated façades, installations and various light art displays will turn a stroll through the city into a truly memorable experience.
