The city of Madrid has enjoyed its best summer ever for hotel accommodation, attracting 1.76 million visitors and recording nearly 3.5 million overnight stays between July and August, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE). These figures represent increases of 3.6 per cent and 1.8 per cent respectively compared with the same period in 2025. According to data released by the INE, August marked the best month on record for Madrid’s hotels, with 867,449 guests – 10.9 per cent more than in the same month of 2025 – and 1,708,606 overnight stays, 5.3 per cent more than in August of the previous year. Furthermore, employment in the hotel sector reached 15,119 people during this summer month, representing year-on-year growth of 5.4 per cent.
The Councillor for Tourism, Almudena Maíllo, has highlighted the importance of these figures, stating that “the main objective is for Madrid to maintain a level of tourist activity spread across all twelve months of the year without relying on a single high season”. For the councillor, “this seasonal smoothing is essential to ensure that tourism employment is stable and of high quality, and to enable businesses to plan, invest and offer long-term career opportunities in the city”.
Domestic and international demand on the rise
Travellers resident in Spain were the main drivers of tourism in the capital during August, with a year-on-year rise of 16 per cent, compared with an 8.1 per cent increase in international travellers. In terms of overnight stays, these rose by 11.4 per cent and 2.8 per cent, respectively.
The United States once again led the international source markets with a notable increase of 28.1 per cent, totalling 98,917 travellers and 209,160 overnight stays – a rise of 20.9 per cent. Mexico came in second, with 37,803 visitors and 82,797 overnight stays – up 16.7 per cent and 11.2 per cent respectively on the same period last year – whilst Brazil recorded a 22.8 per cent rise in visitor numbers and a 22.9 per cent rise in overnight stays.
More than 15,000 people employed in Madrid’s hotels
Employment in the city’s hotels stood at 15,119 people in August, 5.4 per cent more than a year earlier. Last month, Madrid had 812 hotel establishments – 83 more than a year earlier – and 94,417 available beds, representing a 2.8 per cent increase. Room occupancy stood at 64.5 per cent and bed occupancy at 57.7 per cent.
