- From 14 to 26 September, the Museo Picasso Málaga will be hosting the ‘Jornadas Vasconcelos’, a special week of activities to mark the final stretch of the exhibition ‘Joana Vasconcelos: Transfiguration’, which closes on 27 September.

The Museo Picasso Málaga will host the Vasconcelos Days from 14 to 26 September, a special week of activities organised to mark the final stretch of the exhibition Joana Vasconcelos. Transfiguration, which closes on 27 September. This programme offers the public new ways to engage with the Portuguese artist’s creative world through language, craftsmanship, movement, personal reflection and family participation.
The programme will begin on 14 September with Museum in Portuguese, an initiative developed in collaboration with teaching staff from the Portuguese Department of the Official Language School of Málaga. Through meetings and guided tours of the temporary exhibition, the centre’s students will have the opportunity to practise the Portuguese language whilst gaining a deeper understanding of Joana Vasconcelos’s work, highlighting the Portuguese roots of one of the most renowned artists on the international art scene.
The craft techniques that characterise much of Vasconcelos’s work will also play a prominent role in these events. The programme will begin with the workshop Stitch by Stitch, which will take place over two days, 17 and 18 September. Using the works on display in the temporary exhibition as a starting point, participants will explore knitting techniques under the guidance of teacher María Hoyos.
Next, on 24 and 25 September, in the afternoons, the museum will host Stitches with Thread, a contemporary embroidery workshop led by embroiderer and graphic designer Loly Ghirardi (Miss Lylo). Inspired by the traditional Portuguese iconography featured in the exhibition, participants will create their own piece using thread and needle, discovering some of the textile techniques the artist incorporates into her sculptures and installations. The activity will also include a tour of the exhibition.
On Thursday 24 September, at 7.30 pm, a unique event will take place, inviting participants to connect art and wellbeing. In collaboration with Ángel D. Saavedra Valdayo, psychologist, Gestalt psychotherapist and director of Lamar, the School of Gestalt Psychotherapy in Málaga, the museum will organise ‘Transforming the gaze’, a session of meditation and Gestalt therapy in the temporary exhibition galleries, whilst also showcasing the work of the Portuguese artist. Surrounded by Vasconcelos’s works, participants will explore the processes of personal transformation suggested by the artist’s work, in an experience designed to foster awareness, creativity and mindfulness.
The programme will continue on the morning of Saturday 26 September with a new edition of Museo en movimiento, the programme aimed at families.
Entitled ‘We’re going a bit mad!’, this workshop will draw on one of the most distinctive aspects of Vasconcelos’s work: her ability to transform everyday objects into surprising artistic creations. Following an interactive tour of the exhibition, children and adults will turn everyday items into new creative pieces, sharing an artistic experience and learning together.
The Museo Picasso Málaga thus brings to a close an educational and cultural programme that has seen the participation of over 1,300 people, of whom more than 900 have taken part in recent months through local community organisations and groups working with people with disabilities and those in socially vulnerable situations.
