NEW WAITING TIMES AT EUROPEAN BORDERS ARE BOOSTING TÜRKIYE’S APPEAL THIS SUMMER

  • Air connectivity, quick access and an extensive network of airports cement Türkiye’s position as one of the most convenient destinations for travel this summer.

The growing importance of the travel experience comes at a particularly significant time for European tourism. According to research commissioned by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the introduction of the European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) could result in waiting times of between three and four hours at certain border crossings. The study also warns that around a third of travellers might reconsider their trips to the Schengen Area in the face of these potential delays.

Against this backdrop, Türkiye stands out as a particularly competitive alternative thanks to a combination of air connectivity, modern infrastructure and streamlined arrival procedures that allow travellers to spend less time in transit and more time enjoying their destination.

One of the country’s major assets is its extensive airport network, which connects Türkiye’s seven regions and provides direct access to some of its most popular destinations. Beyond Istanbul, cities such as İzmir, the gateway to the Turkish Aegean; Muğla, home to popular resorts such as Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye; and Antalya, the main hub of the Turkish Riviera, have direct connections to numerous European cities, particularly during the summer season.

The strength of this connectivity is particularly evident at İstanbul Airport, one of the world’s major international aviation hubs. On 31 May, it recorded 1,730 flight movements in a single day – the highest figure since its opening – consolidating its position as one of the busiest airports in the world.

As well as being easy to reach, Türkiye stands out for the ease of getting around once you’ve arrived. The main airports are connected by metro, city buses, shuttle services and taxis, providing quick access to city centres, hotels and major tourist attractions.

With multiple daily flights from Europe and journey times that in many cases barely exceed three or four hours, the country is establishing itself as an ideal choice for both long holidays and weekend breaks. Even such iconic destinations as Cappadocia are easily accessible thanks to their proximity to airports with domestic and international connections.
