- The region of Macedonia, located in northern Greece, has held an exclusive tourism presentation event in Málaga, where the destination’s main new developments were unveiled, along with its outstanding cultural, natural and gastronomic offerings.
- The event, which took place at the Hotel Vincci Posada del Patio, brought together institutional representatives and leading professionals from the tourism sector, the media and tour operators interested in strengthening the link between Spain and the Greek market.
The event began with a welcome address by Mr Pantelis Gassios, Counsellor for Economic and Commercial Affairs and Director of the Economic and Commercial Office of the Greek Embassy in Spain, who highlighted the importance of continuing to foster tourism and economic ties between the two countries, with particular emphasis on the synergies between Andalusia and northern Greece. ‘According to data from the Bank of Greece, tourism revenue in 2025 exceeded 22 billion euros and tourist arrivals reached 44 million, contributing to a 15% increase in GDP, one of the highest percentages recorded in the sector,’ said Mr Gassios.
Furthermore, the event, organised under the auspices of the Greek Embassy in Spain and the Spanish-Greek Chamber of Commerce, began with a speech by Ms Elisavet Siaridou, Head of the Tourism Promotion Department for the Region of Central Macedonia. During her speech, she outlined the region’s overall offering, highlighting its historical significance as the birthplace of Alexander the Great, its valuable archaeological heritage and the richness of a region where ancient monuments, monasteries and natural parks coexist. She also emphasised the diversity of experiences Central Macedonia offers, from its extensive beaches bathed by the Aegean Sea and its renowned Mediterranean cuisine — featuring traditional specialities such as Thessaloniki bougatsa, one of northern Greece’s most iconic desserts — to its mountain trails, ski resorts and key cultural sites, establishing itself as a destination capable of combining history, nature, gastronomy, spirituality and active tourism all year round.
Next to take the floor was Mr Yorgos Broutzas, Director General of the Halkidiki Tourism Department, who outlined the latest developments, the first-class hotel infrastructure, and the coastal and natural potential of this iconic peninsula, highlighting its crystal-clear beaches and its firm commitment to sustainable and experiential tourism. During the presentations, there was agreement that: “Macedonia offers an authentic and diverse experience, where the contemporary Spanish traveller can discover everything from unique archaeological sites and vibrant cities to idyllic beaches, perfectly meeting the demands for authenticity, culture, nature and relaxation.” He also stated that one of the most notable sites in what is known as the homeland of Aristotle is Mount Athos, one of the most important spiritual sites in the Orthodox world.
Finally, Dimitris Ganitis, Director General of the Thessaloniki Convention Bureau, took the floor, highlighting the city of Thessaloniki as a major cultural hub in northern Greece. During his speech, he placed particular emphasis on its significant Byzantine heritage and its role as a meeting point between history and modernity, whilst also emphasising its growing appeal to Spanish travellers.
A destination of contrasts: history, beaches, cuisine and mythology all year round
Macedonia, Greece’s largest region, is a destination of contrasts where history, beaches, nature and mythology coexist in perfect harmony all year round. The region offers travellers a wealth of authentic experiences, from vibrant cities to landscapes of great natural beauty and unique historical sites.
The city of Thessaloniki, considered the cultural capital of northern Greece, stands out for its lively nightlife, vibrant university atmosphere, cosmopolitan character and renowned culinary tradition, which makes every visit a unique experience. Chalkidiki, on the other hand, surprises with its three iconic peninsulas, known as ‘the three fingers’, where white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters blend with vast pine forests.
Meanwhile, areas such as Kavala and Pieria offer a perfect blend of nature, heritage, active tourism and wellness, with the imposing Mount Olympus, the cradle of the gods of Greek mythology, serving as a spectacular backdrop.
Gastronomy also played a leading role during the event. Attendees were able to discover the culinary richness of Central Macedonia through a selection of typical regional products, such as feta cheese, Greek olives, olive oil, sweets and internationally renowned traditional wines, as well as other olive oil-based creations and Mediterranean recipes that reflect the authenticity and character of Greek cuisine from the north of the country.
The event concluded with a prize draw for several stays in various locations across the Central Macedonia region, thanks to the collaboration of various local hotel companies and tourist establishments. Specifically, several stays were raffled off: one in Thessaloniki, one in Pieria and two others in Halkidiki, offering the winners the opportunity to experience first-hand the hospitality, cultural richness and most iconic landscapes of the destination.
Afterwards, attendees enjoyed an exclusive cocktail reception featuring Greek and Mediterranean specialities in a relaxed atmosphere in the hotel’s inner courtyard, fostering professional exchange between Spanish and Greek tourism representatives.
With this presentation in Málaga, the region of Macedonia reaffirms its commitment to the Spanish market and its aim to position itself as one of the most comprehensive and attractive destinations in the Mediterranean, where history, culture, nature and hospitality come together to offer travellers unique experiences.
