From legendary Troy to Bodrum, this itinerary through coastal villages, beaches, archaeological sites and local cuisine invites you to discover some of the most fascinating landscapes on the Aegean coast.
Although travel trends are constantly evolving, road trips continue to hold their appeal. The freedom to set your own pace, discover unexpected places and enjoy the journey as much as the destination has made this format one of the most highly valued travel experiences amongst today’s travellers. In Türkiye, few routes offer as many attractions as the Aegean coast, a region where history, nature, cuisine and the sea unfold over hundreds of kilometres.
The journey can begin in Çanakkale, the gateway to some of the country’s most important historical sites. There you’ll find the Gallipoli Peninsula and the ancient city of Troy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whose history spanning more than 5,000 years continues to fascinate travellers from all over the world. You can round off your visit at the Troy Museum before heading south.
The next stop is Assos, one of the most evocative spots on the Aegean coast. Situated next to the village of Behramkale, this town combines archaeological heritage, small bays with crystal-clear waters and a relaxed atmosphere that invites you to stay for several days. Highlights include the Temple of Athena, with panoramic views over the Aegean Sea, and its restaurants specialising in fresh fish overlooking the harbour.
Continuing along the route, the landscapes of the Kaz Mountains come into view, along with towns such as Ayvalık, famous for its beaches, historic architecture and the nearby island of Cunda – one of the best places to enjoy Aegean cuisine. Squid, prawns, octopus and a wide selection of meze take centre stage on the table in this enclave with a character all of its own.
Further south lies the province of İzmir, where the Çeşme peninsula offers beaches with crystal-clear waters, thermal springs, historical heritage and a lively local scene. Nearby, Alaçatı has established itself as one of the leading international destinations for kitesurfing, whilst Urla attracts travellers with its vineyards, wine routes and restaurants recognised by the MICHELIN Guide.
The route continues towards Kuşadası, one of Türkiye’s leading tourist and cruise destinations. Before arriving, it is well worth stopping off at Ephesus, one of the best-preserved archaeological sites in the Mediterranean, and at the picturesque village of Şirince, recognised by UNWTO as one of the World’s Best Tourist Villages. Beaches, hidden coves and spectacular sunsets on Pigeon Island round off the experience.
Further south, Didyma combines some of the region’s most attractive beaches with a significant historical legacy. The monumental Temple of Apollo, one of the most important sanctuaries of antiquity, serves as a reminder of the role this area played in the classical world.
The tour ends in Bodrum, one of Türkiye’s most iconic destinations. Its Blue Flag beaches, exclusive bays, diving and sailing opportunities, as well as historic monuments such as Bodrum Castle and the ruins of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, make the city the perfect finishing touch to this road trip. Added to this is an outstanding culinary scene and a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury establishments to charming guesthouses.
For those wishing to extend their journey, the road continues to such attractive destinations as Datça, Marmaris and Fethiye, where the Aegean begins to merge with the Mediterranean in a landscape of coves, mountains and coastal villages that are hard to forget.
