- The arrival of spring once again turns the mountains of Trevinca (Galicia) purple, one of the most unique natural enclaves in the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula.
- This year, the Trevinca massif is preparing to welcome all those who wish to experience the spectacular flowering of the heather up close.
This natural phenomenon, which reaches its peak after the snow melts, transforms the landscape into a veritable spectacle of colour that attracts hikers and nature lovers. The fields and slopes are covered with a blanket of purple flowers of the species Erica ciliaris and Erica tetralix, creating one of the most breathtaking views of spring in Galicia.
Part of the Natura 2000 network, the Trevinca massif stands out for its extraordinary biodiversity and the variety of ecosystems it harbours, from glacial lakes to extensive high-mountain heathlands. It is precisely in these heathlands that species such as Erica ciliaris and Erica tetralix display their characteristic purple blanket, creating an environment of great ecological and scenic value.
With the aim of bringing this phenomenon to the public’s attention, various local organisations have organised a series of guided walks during May 2026:
- Saturday 16 May: a 12-kilometre walk of medium difficulty, organised by Terras Altas de Trevinca (Telephone: 722 336 822 – terrasaltasdetrevinca.es)
- Saturday 16 May: a 10-kilometre alternative route of low difficulty, organised by O Trisquel (Telephone: 616 546972 – trevinca@otrisquel.com)
- Saturday 23 May: a 15-kilometre route of medium-high difficulty, organised by the Montañas de Trevinca Mountaineering Club (Telephone: 616 546 972 – club@montanasdetrevinca.es)
These activities will allow participants to explore a landscape shaped by ice and water, where silence and authenticity form an essential part of the experience, and thus discover the biodiversity and ecosystems of Trevinca, from its glacial lakes to the stunning mountain heathlands.
In addition to its natural beauty, the experience is complemented by the chance to enjoy local cuisine, based on locally sourced produce and traditional recipes.
The flowering of the heather not only offers a unique visual spectacle but also a sensory experience that cements Trevinca’s status as one of the must-visit destinations for spring nature tourism.
