SUN AND BEACH TOWNS JOIN THE ‘TURISMO QUE SUMA’ INITIATIVE

Los municipios de sol y playa se suman a la iniciativa ‘Turismo Que Suma’
  • The Alliance is taking part in the launch of the project spearheaded by EXCELTUR, which brings together the sector’s leading organisations to highlight the social and economic value of tourism.

A delegation representing the destinations that make up the Alliance of Sun and Beach Tourist Municipalities (AMT Sol y Playa) – comprising Benidorm,

Salou, Lloret, Torremolinos and Calvià, took part in the launch event for ‘Turismo Que Suma’, an initiative promoted by EXCELTUR which aims to highlight the contribution of tourism to Spain’s economic, social and regional development.

The event took place in the Assembly Hall of Madrid City Council and brought together representatives from the main business organisations and institutions linked to the tourism sector.

AMT Sol y Playa was among the organisations invited to this launch event, alongside the Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation (CEHAT), the Spanish Confederation of Travel Agencies (CEAV), Hostelería de España, the Association of Airlines and the National Federation of Car Hire Companies (FENEVAL), demonstrating the sector’s shared commitment to a more sustainable, competitive model of tourism that promotes well-being.

During the event, the president of EXCELTUR, Juan Orti, and the organisation’s executive vice-president, Óscar Perelli, presented the principles and objectives of the initiative, designed as a platform for collaboration between public authorities, businesses and tourist destinations to strengthen the role of tourism as a driver of development and social cohesion. The second part of the event featured speeches by the president of the Madrid Hotel Business Association (AEHM), Gabriel García; the Deputy Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport of the Community of Madrid, Luis Martín Izquierdo; and the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, who brought the event to a close.

By joining ‘Turismo Que Suma’, AMT Sol y Playa endorses a manifesto that sets out a new approach to promoting tourism in Spain, based on a balance between competitiveness, sustainability and social wellbeing. The document proposes more than 80 measures organised into five main areas (tourist overcrowding, access to housing and gentrification, employment, the environment and governance) with the aim of moving towards a model that generates greater economic and social value for destinations. It also advocates strengthening public-private partnerships, improving public participation in decision-making, and promoting more efficient, innovative tourism management that respects the environment and residents’ quality of life.
