One year after opening its doors in the Retiro neighbourhood, Roxana’s neo-tavern receives one of the most cherished awards by the public: the Solete de la Guía Repsol.
At number 39 Calle Lope de Rueda, very close to Doctor Castelo and behind Menéndez Pelayo, Taberna La Rox has been beating for a year now, a neo-tavern that has become an essential spot for the residents of Retiro. This December, coinciding with its first anniversary, and on Monday 1 December, Roxana’s project, a resident of the neighbourhood for more than a decade and the absolute soul of the establishment, receives one of the most cherished awards by the public: a Solete from the Repsol Guide, the distinction that rewards places with personality, a special atmosphere and rich, honest cuisine.
The Soletes celebrate places that charm us with their appeal, friendliness, service and authentic offerings: cafés, neighbourhood bars, taverns, eateries, ice cream parlours, terraces and wine bars that stand out for making us feel good and offering an experience that invites us to return.
Taberna La Rox opened its doors a year ago, now celebrating its first anniversary, following Roxana’s long career in a large hospitality group in Madrid. With a concept that blends Madrid tradition and contemporary style, the space has established itself as an authentic refuge with a warm atmosphere and its own personality.
Covering 83 square metres, the premises have a bar area, a counter, a central table and a small room with five tables, with a total capacity for around 40 diners. The intention is clear: to make everyone who comes in feel at home, eat well and enjoy friendly, relaxed service.
La Rox champions traditional Mediterranean cuisine with Andalusian touches, local produce and long-standing suppliers, such as J. Martínez’s fruit shop and Alimentación Leo.
Among its most representative dishes are:
- Torreznos with patata revolcona
- Mussels bouchot with a spicy touch
- Fideuá with free-range chicken thigh and aioli
- Tagliatelle with lemon, inspired by a trip to Capri
- Oxtail with chips, cooked for a day and a half
Although it is not a cocktail bar, La Rox has a good selection of wines, sherry vermouth, Malaga beer and personal recommendations from the house, such as Txaro Urago, Finca Resalte and Triángulo.
Throughout its first year, La Rox has become a meeting place for neighbours, friends, curious visitors and lovers of good food. During the week, locals and office workers fill its tables; at weekends, a younger crowd comes to enjoy themselves in an unpretentious atmosphere with a lively vibe and good vibes.
A small space with the soul of a large house, it has now received recognition that celebrates exactly that: being a place that makes you feel good.
