- If Hannibal Lecter taught us anything, it’s that horror can also be delicious.
- At Fabra, we’ve rounded up the most hedonistic plans for celebrating Halloween with a culinary twist, and we’ve got ideas for everyone: a devilish cocktail and a huge party in Barcelona, an exquisite pan de muerto, a journey into the world of ‘Thriller’, a family-friendly and artistic outing on the Costa del Sol… Trick, treat and a dish!
In Madrid, a trendy Mexican dessert: 5 Gallos’ pan de muerto with spiced hot chocolate
To no one’s surprise, the restaurant 5 Gallos is a huge hit thanks to its original and down-to-earth philosophy: bringing together the culinary worlds of Mexico and the Basque Country in a venue situated in the liveliest part of the Salamanca district, where eating and drinking well—without having to take out a mortgage—is the name of the game.
The Night of the Dead is one of the great highlights of Mexican culture, celebrated at this time of year by weaving a colourful bridge between both worlds. As a sweet finishing touch, you simply must try their pan de muerto, a soft and moist bun, very similar to the Spanish roscón de Reyes, but round, and topped with a small ball resembling a skull and two cross-shaped strips representing the shinbones. It’s gaining more and more fans in Madrid.
That is why, at 5 Gallos, chef Andoni Alzugaray – a champion of artisanal cooking – will be preparing his country’s traditional pan de muerto using traditional methods (a process requiring hours of work and proving). He will serve it accompanied by authentic Mexican hot chocolate, richly spiced and sweet, with cinnamon and almonds. And not just any hot chocolate, but that from the prestigious Mayordomo brand in Oaxaca, renowned for its high quality and winner of numerous international awards. Diners can choose whether they would prefer a water-based or milk-based version. It will only be available, however, on 1 November, during the restaurant’s usual opening hours (kitchen hours: 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm and 8.00 pm to 1.00 am). The price of the dessert (the pan de muerto and hot chocolate are served together) is 11 euros.
In Barcelona, a deliciously terrifying limited-edition cocktail (and a great evening) at Shôko Barcelona
The dining space at Shôko Barcelona is joining in the celebrations with a cocktail created especially to toast the most eerie night of the year. It’s called the Evil Eye, a creation that plays on contrasts and captivates with both its aesthetics and its combination of flavours. Brugal Doble Reserva, chilli liqueur, spiced cordial, cinnamon and ginger beer come together in an intense, refreshing and slightly spicy blend, where the warm notes of the spices are counterbalanced by a vibrant finish.
Its presentation, inspired by Halloween’s darkest imagery, rounds off an experience in which mixology is also part of the show. Evil Eye, however, is a limited-edition cocktail: it will only be available on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st October, as well as on Sunday 1st November. Three days to discover this creation at Shôko Barcelona and toast Halloween with a concoction that hides a hint of heat, a good dose of character and the allure of the unexpected.
And there’s more. On the night of 31 October, Shôko Barcelona’s club will host the Pure Shôko session, providing the soundtrack to the evening with a musical selection spanning UK drill, trap, R&B, Afrobeats, reggaeton and hip hop. An event for those who want to dance until the early hours and discover another side to Halloween on the shores of the Mediterranean.
On the Costa del Sol, Bonbonniere dives into the world of ‘Thriller’ this Halloween
A haunted cemetery, dancing zombies, that unforgettable B-movie vibe, monsters with bad ideas, but plenty of flair… ‘Thriller’, Michael Jackson’s iconic track and its music video, are an essential part of any 31 October celebration. That’s why Bonbonniere Marbella will be fully immersing itself in the aesthetic world of the King of Pop’s most terrifying song to celebrate a Halloween party that promises to be the talk of the town. An evening packed with actors dressed as the creatures that populated Jackson’s music video, incredible décor and the best house music await all those brave enough to venture into the Palacio de Babilonia.
To kick off such a unique and exhilarating night, the best idea is to book a table at Le Jardin, the club’s dining venue. This terrace, always buzzing with life, hosts the city’s finest dinner show, which, for Halloween, will be filled with all manner of malevolent and evocative creatures set to the best music, fire and dancing. Its menu is cosmopolitan and very appetising, and it also boasts a comprehensive selection of signature cocktails.
Music will be another of the main highlights of Halloween night at Bonbonniere, which will host a special set by Meloko, a French DJ and producer based in Marseille and one of the leading names on the southern French electronic music scene.
Also on the Costa del Sol, Laguna Beach is celebrating Halloween: young artists and the best of its Mediterranean and Andalusian cuisine
Estepona’s most unique leisure and wellness complex, halfway between Marbella and Sotogrande, is gearing up to welcome the many visitors who will be flocking to the coast in search of milder temperatures and the beauty of the Mediterranean. That’s why, over the coming days, Laguna Beach and Mar de Sazzon, its most gourmet restaurant, are set to become a must-visit destination.
The festivities kick off on 31 October. On that day, at 12 noon, all budding young artists who fancy taking part (the workshop costs €35 per person) will be able to enjoy a special session of Little Picassos, the travelling emerging art school for children that’s a hit on the Costa del Sol. On this occasion, the day will centre on Halloween, which will inspire the works of art created by the little ones, who will have a frightfully good time – never better said.
Meanwhile, the more discerning adults can enjoy a light bite at the Mar de Sazzon bar area or, why not, extend their stay on its bougainvillea-covered terrace, weather permitting, or in its elegant dining room. In both spaces, any of their dishes are sure to tempt the palate, with the sea and the fish market taking centre stage, and where the finest ingredient-driven cuisine with an Andalusian and Mediterranean soul is celebrated.
