TUNISIA STRENGTHENS ITS POSITION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN WITH ITS SIGHTS SET ON BECOMING THE ARAB CAPITAL OF CULTURE IN 2027

  • Following its participation in FITUR 2026, Tunisia has consolidated its position as one of the most comprehensive and versatile destinations in the Mediterranean and is moving steadily towards a new phase marked by innovation, product diversification and the promotion of its cultural identity.

  • The country’s presence at the fair has served not only to showcase its current offering, but also to preview the broad strategic lines that will define its tourism development in the coming years.

Tunisia is starting the year with a proposal that integrates historical heritage, desert, coastline, gastronomy and immersive experiences, reinforcing its commitment to a more qualitative and sustainable tourism model in line with the new motivations of international travellers, especially those from the Spanish market, with which it has close cultural and Mediterranean ties.

The year 2027 marks one of the country’s major milestones: the designation of Tunis as the Arab Capital of Tourism, a recognition that will give rise to an ambitious programme of cultural events, promotional activities and infrastructure investments aimed at enhancing the visitor experience and strengthening the role of tourism as a driver of regional development. The countdown has already begun, and 2026 is shaping up to be a key year of preparation and positioning.

Added to this context is the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the start of filming of Star Wars, an event that will showcase iconic locations such as Matmata, Nefta and the island of Djerba, consolidating Tunisia as a leading destination for film and experiential tourism. This cultural and audiovisual legacy is part of a broader narrative that connects history, creativity and emotion.

As part of FITUR, Tunisia Tourism held the professional forum ‘Tunisia Reborn’, a meeting aimed at the Spanish market that brought together journalists, experts, content creators and professionals from the sector to showcase the richness, diversity and authenticity of the destination, as well as the process of renewal that the country is undergoing and its close cultural and Mediterranean connection with Spain.

The forum highlighted Tunisia’s uniqueness as a destination capable of offering authentic, accessible and transformative experiences, combining ancient history, natural contrasts, fusion cuisine and a local identity based on hospitality, together with a growing range of gastronomic, cultural, Saharan and community tourism.

Throughout the forum, the various participants agreed on the uniqueness of Tunisia as a destination that combines ancient history, natural contrasts, a fusion cuisine resulting from the crossroads of civilisations, and a local identity marked by hospitality. The development of products linked to gastronomic, cultural, Saharan and community tourism was also highlighted, as was the country’s ability to offer complete and accessible trips in just a few days.

With its participation in Fitur 2026 and the celebration of the “Tunisia Reborn” forum, the country reaffirms its desire to consolidate its position in the Spanish market as a leading destination, capable of evolving without losing its essence and projecting itself into the future with a solid and coherent identity. Tunisia is moving steadily towards 2027, inviting travellers to discover not just a destination, but a complete experience that connects history, emotion and territory.
