On 23 September, the Spanish Tourism Institute (Turespaña) presented the exhibition ‘Avatars of Seville’ at the Spanish Embassy in Berlin. This artistic project by the Spanish-German photographer and cultural manager Kurt Grötsch offers a contemporary perspective on the Andalusian capital.
The initiative, organised by the Spanish Tourism Office in Berlin in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Science at the Spanish Embassy, aims to offer the German public a different perspective on Seville and its heritage, combining photography, symbolism, and elements of its cultural identity.
The exhibition brings together 16 photographs taken at various locations across the city, including the Plaza de España, the Triana Bridge and María Luisa Park. Through these images, Grötsch offers an interpretation that links architecture, traditions, spirituality and everyday life, inviting visitors to discover Seville from a perspective that goes beyond conventional tourist representations.
The opening was attended by representatives from the media and cultural organisations in Berlin. During the event, Álvaro Blanco, Turespaña’s Tourism Counsellor in Berlin, highlighted the value of the initiative in conveying to the German public “an avant-garde vision of Spain” and encouraging them to discover or revisit the destination with a fresh perspective, in line with the spirit of Turespaña’s international campaign “Think you know Spain? Think again!”.
“Avatares de Sevilla” will remain on display in the exhibition hall of the Spanish Embassy in Berlin until mid-November 2026, as part of the institution’s cultural and tourism programme.
The project, which combines tourism promotion and artistic creation, also has an international focus. As its creator explained during the presentation, plans are being considered to exhibit it in other venues in southern and western Germany, and the proposal has also sparked interest in Asian markets such as South Korea and China.
Andalusia is a particularly important destination for the German market. The region has direct flights from Germany to the airports of Seville, Málaga and Jerez de la Frontera, and in 2025 welcomed around 1.2 million German tourists, consolidating its position as one of the leading Spanish destinations for this market.
