Victoria Eugenia of Battenberg, granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England, set foot in Spain for the first time to seal her engagement to King Alfonso XIII in January 1906. Barely four months later, she became queen.
Thanks to the discipline instilled in her during her British education, she adapted rigorously to the demands of her new rank, remained loyal to the king and the Crown, and ensured the succession, as she was the mother of seven children.
Victoria Eugenia modernised the role of queen consort, which she held until 15 April 1931, the date of her exile. After that, she only returned to Spain on one occasion: the christening of her great-grandson, now King Felipe VI, in 1968.
This exhibition takes a closer look at the figure of the queen and pays tribute to her contribution to Spanish society. It reflects on her childhood in the English court, her courtship and marriage, her public image as monarch consort and her position as a mother, and provides a glimpse into her private life. However, the exhibition focuses above all on her transformative work at the Spanish court, her official role, her promotion of charitable causes, and her intense public activity, which was the key to her popularity.
