Delta Airlines, based in Atlanta (USA), has its origins in a field spraying company. In the 1920s, it became Delta Air Service and began operating as an airline.
Delta took its name from the Mississippi Delta region where the Huff Daland Dusters company operated spraying the fields in this southern agricultural area of the country. The idea came to Catherine FitzGerald, who was a company executive for four decades, a suggestion she made to C. E. Woolman after he took over the Huff Daland Dusters company in 1928, renamed the company Delta Air Service and began carrying passengers in 1929, maintaining a crop spraying division until 1966.
The company went through a severe economic crisis in 2004 from which it emerged stronger, as can be seen in the 2008 acquisition of Northwest Airlines, thus becoming the world’s largest airline, flying to 275 destinations in 50 countries and carrying almost 200 million passengers.
Delta One, luxury on high
Delta One is the US airline’s most exclusive in-flight and on-ground travel experience.
