Remembering the flavors of yesteryear

Faithful to its strong commitment to sustainability and the environment, Huerta Carabaña develops an honest and respectful agriculture with its ancestors. Taking advantage of the natural resources offered by the environment, such as the waters of the river Tajuña, which irrigates the three hundred hectares of orchards, vineyards and olive groves, they have become leaders in the production of unique fruit and vegetables.

The architect of this ambitious project is José Cabrera Orellana, who defines it as “not only a tribute to agricultural history, but also a commitment to the future”, also considering that it is essential to conserve this gastronomic heritage in order to preserve the flavours of yesteryear.

Huerta Carabaña is located in the village of Carabaña in the southeast of the community of Madrid, from where it embarks each season in the search for excellence. To achieve this, they use natural, organic seeds, products and processes that respect the planet. While the commitment to sustainability that we mentioned earlier is reflected in the use of 100% renewable energy and the charging points for electric vehicles that they have, minimising CO2 emissions, selling their products locally to ensure that they reach their recipients fresh and in the best state of preservation, as well as collaborating with various local companies to ensure that part of the process moves ever closer to total sustainability.

They also promote local employment by helping rural populations to recover and take care of their employees, whom they consider part of their big family, ensuring that they do their work with care, patience and passion.

Main building of the estate

Huerta Carabaña is also a space for agricultural innovation and a research laboratory. Every year it receives guided visits from schools and adult groups by prior reservation, allowing them to discover the importance of biodiversity in food and agriculture, the value of sustainable cultivation and the advances made in this field, to taste fruit and vegetables fresh from the plant and to participate in ecological awareness and training projects, thus also demonstrating a clear educational vocation.

Throughout all these years, Huerta Carabaña has received numerous awards in the fields of agriculture and gastronomy, becoming a point of reference for those who demand fresh, natural food grown under sustainability criteria. But undoubtedly the greatest achievement has been the recovery and cultivation of more than two hundred varieties of tomatoes, preserving their genetic biodiversity and rescuing other unknown types cultivated for centuries in different regions of Europe, America and Asia.

Orchards, vineyards and olive groves

The garden has a unique collection of tomatoes in the country that I have already mentioned, the kind that have all the flavour, as well as 27 fruit trees: pears, apples, peaches, cherries, plums, plums, umbrellas and figs, among others; 32 types of fruit full of flavour: strawberries, raspberries, melons, watermelons…, 26 varieties of vegetables: courgettes, peppers, garlic, lettuce, cucumbers, aubergines, chard, broccoli, red cabbage, cabbages, among others, and delicious and healthy pulses.

Its success lies not only in the seeds, without modifications or alterations,  which are the great treasure of Huerta Carabaña and the secret of the flavour and quality of its harvests, in the use of completely organic products, in fertilising the soil with organic compost from the donkeys, sheep, goats and chickens on the farm; in the biological monitoring of their crops, controlling fungi and bacteria thanks to 100% natural and effective resources such as the rose bushes that adorn the surroundings of the plantations or certain insects and in the water used to irrigate the crops, which comes directly from a spring known for its exceptionally high mineral-medicinal content. This combination results in fruit and vegetables of exceptional quality that reach our homes in their maximum natural expression.

From garden to plate, ready to eat

Another of Huerta Carabaña’s passions is wine production. In their vineyards, which occupy fourteen hectares, they grow four different varieties of grape: Tempranillo, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, which they use to make their wines, called Valdepotro, in their own winery, also located on the estate, guaranteeing the right environment with the right temperature and light.

It also has its own oil mill where they produce five different types of extra virgin olive oil from Picual, Manzanilla, Cornicabra, Gordal and Royal Changlot olives grown in the 180 hectares of olive groves, which, like the wide range of packaged and canned products, can be purchased at the Huerta Carabaña online store.

All their products can be purchased at the Corte Inglés department stores on Goya, Serrano and Castellana streets and in the Campo de las Naciones shopping centre, as well as at the Hipercor stores in Pozuelo de Alarcón and Sanchinarro, and through their online store with exclusive delivery in the community of Madrid. And in other prestigious establishments such as Saddle, Lhardy, in the Villamagna hotel and in restaurants such as Casa Agustín in El Boalo and in their own restaurants.
